City Receives Award for The Successful Participation in the NLC Prescription Discount Card Program

The city was recognized with a plaque from NLC at the special city council meeting on June 19 as part of the city’s celebration of West Virginia day.Among the nearly 600 cities participating in the program, Clarksburg leads the nation in savings to residents.Through its participation in the National League of Cities (NLC) Prescription Discount Card program, the City of Clarksburg has saved its residents $507,087 on prescription medications since the program’s launch in January 2009.

The NLC Prescription Discount Card program is available at no cost to the city or residents as a result of Clarksburg’s membership in NLC.The discount card can be used by residents of Clarksburg who are without health insurance or those with insurance that have prescriptions not covered by their insurance. Some prescriptions for pets are also covered by the program.

The customized City of Clarksburg discount cards have been used more than 8,300 times on over 33,000 prescriptions in Clarksburg, with an average discount of 34 percent per prescription off the retail price, exceeding the national average savings of 23 percent. The average savings to residents was $14.97 per prescription.

“In challenging economic times like these, it is heartening to see so many residents take advantage of this free program,” said Patsy Trecost, Mayor of Clarksburg. “Not only are our residents receiving significant savings on their prescription medications by using this card, they are also reporting that it is extremely easy to use. They don’t have to worry about enrollment forms or membership fees and they have no restrictions or limits on using this card.”

“We’re pleased to have joined with Clarksburg to help so many residents by offering a program that provides significant cost savings and is easy to use,” said NLC Executive Director Donald J. Borut. “We hope that the NLC program continues to grow and bring welcome relief to residents of Clarksburg.”

The NLC card can be used when purchasing prescription medications at more than 20 pharmacies in and around the city. It can also be used at more than 60,000 participating retail pharmacies across the country.

Obtaining and using a Prescription Discount Card is easy. Residents can print a card at caremark.com/nlc. Then, they simply present their card and their prescription(s) at a participating pharmacy. City residents can call toll-free 1.888.620.1749 or visit caremark.com/nlc for assistance with the program. The program is administered by CVS Caremark.
