Chestnut Street Update

The City of Clarksburg has been in communication with Governor Jim Justice’s office and is proud to announce that the final phase of the South Chestnut Street Improvement Project has been officially advertised for competitive bidding as of June 1, 2017.

Bids are due by 10 AM on Tuesday, June 27th, 2017 to the Division of Highways in Charleston, WV.

The City of Clarksburg is looking forward to the completion of the final phase of this project. City Manager Martin Howe stated, “This project has been a very high priority to have completed.  The administration has continued to communicate with the Department of Highways and ultimately Governor Justice to get the final phase of this project out for bid.”  The City has previously committed $1.1 million to the overall project. 

South Chestnut Street is a main artery connecting downtown to U.S. Route 98, VA Hospital and Nursing Home, Robert C. Byrd High School, Hite Field recreation area, Highland Hospital as well as Route 19 South.  The completion of this project will enable the safe passage for both vehicular and pedestrian traffic.

Mayor Catherine Goings stated, “I am appreciative of our administration for their efforts in moving this project forward as well as former Senator Sam Cann who continued to stay involved with this project mainly through communications with the Governor’s office.”

Completion is scheduled for Friday, September 29, 2017.

UPDATE

The bid opening for the South Chestnut Street project was held June 27, 2017 at 10:00 AM in Charleston, WV.  According to the WV Department of Transportation, the apparent low bidder for the project was Mountaineer Contractors from Kingwood, WV in the amount of $368,649.84. 

This is anticipated to be the last and final phase of the project.  This phase will include installing approximately 320 square feet of segmental retaining walls, excavating and backfilling of material, 2100 linear feet of curb, 1300 square yards of sidewalk and lastly 1100 tons of asphalt.

City Manager Martin Howe stated, “This is great news and we are very hopeful the WV Department of Highways awards this bid immediately and provides a Notice to Proceed to the contractor.”  Howe continued, “Our residents have been long awaiting the completion of this project as well as the local businesses and First Responders that have been adversely affected.”

This project is anticipated to be completed by end of 2017.

UPDATE

The third and final phase of the South Chestnut Street Project will begin Wednesday July 26, 2017. This phase of the project will consist of resurfacing, sidewalks and guardrail placement. 

The West Virginia Department of Highways awarded the contract to Mountaineer Contractors of Kingwood, WV for $368,649.84. Construction is anticipated to last 4-6 weeks, barring any unforeseen issues.  The contract completion date is September 29, 2017.
