Legal Aid of West Virginia is the state’s primary provider of civil legal aid and advocacy services, with 12 office locations across the state, including Clarksburg. The Legal Aid of WV, Clarksburg location employs five (5) attorneys, three (3) paralegals, and a Family Advocacy, Support and Training (FAST) advocate, and represents the citizens of Harrison, Doddridge, Lewis, Taylor and Gilmore Counties in domestic, family, public benefits, and landlord tenant work.
Legal Aid of WV focuses its work in three (3) program areas: Civil Legal Aid, Behavioral Health Advocacy, and Long-Term and Elder Care, also known as Ombudsman. Legal Aid of WV also offers FAST to parents and children with behavioral and emotional challenges. The goal of the program is to develop a statewide parent and youth support network that will empower families to participate in planning, management, and evaluation of their child’s treatment and service needs.
Citizens who are in need of any of the services provided by Legal Aid can apply for help online or call (866)255-4370. While domestic violence cases are a priority to Legal Aid of WV, everyone who applies for services will receive some level of service from an advocate at Legal Aid of WV. In 2018 the Legal Aid of WV Clarksburg’s location helped 375 people in Harrison County, while statewide they provided services to nearly 10,000 people.
A private attorney involvement specialist is one of the many roles that the attorneys and paralegals take on at Legal Aid of WV. Responsible for finding attorneys to assist Legal Aid WV through pro-bono work to help with the overflow of Legal Aid’s work. In addition to a private attorney involvement specialist; Legal Aid’s advocates specialize in Kinship Care, Domestic Violence/Victims of Crime Act, General Services, Community Economic Development, Public Benefits, and Social Security. A program supported specifically by one of the Clarksburg location attorney’s is the Community Economic Development Legal Project that specializes in helping victims with limited resources who want to start or grow a small business, and non-profits that promote community development to benefit low-income or low-opportunity residents.
Legal Aid of WV has been located in Clarksburg Since 1975 working under a previous name of Legal Services Plan before merging to Legal Aid of WV in 2002. Legal Aid of WV is located at 110 South Third Street, Clarksburg and has been in location since 1999.
