The City of Clarksburg Mayor’s Youth Council held their monthly meeting on January 22, 2019 in Clarksburg City Council Chambers. At the meeting was Sarah Simmons and Tony Merendino, representatives from MVB Bank, who gave a presentation on Finances to the Youth Council.
The presentation lasted around 30 minutes and covered the importance in good credit, opening a checking account, how to properly write a check, scams that can affect your financial stability, and credit cards. These young adults will soon be facing their own financial challenges in the near future, and having the opportunity to learn valuable financial skills was important for the students.
Clarksburg Mayor, Cathy Goings believes that the students were able to leave the presentation with tools to better than finances. “We thought it was a good idea to enlighten students on learning to balance a checkbook, and it was interesting to hear so many didn’t know how to write a check. Students came away from the presentation with an idea on how to better handle their finances”.
Students had the opportunity to ask the MVB representatives financial questions that would help enable their financial success for the remainder of the meeting. Students asked a variety of thought provoking questions such as how to build your credit, what it takes to open and close a credit card, and is it bad to have too many credit cards.
